The Refutation and Analysis of Falun Gong
SOUTH PASADENA, Calif. – Falun Gong, founded by Li Hongzhi
in 1992, claims to have 100 million disciples. It draws attention from
people throughout the world. Author Lao Cheng-Wu studied Buddhism in
Hong Kong for a number of years, and had the opportunity to be a
disciple of Master Nan Huaijin. In his new book, “The Refutation and Analysis of Falun Gong”
(published by iUniverse), Lao, in the Buddhist tradition of refutation,
takes a critical view of Falun Gong, its beliefs and practices
“With an overall view of the remarks and practical actions of Li in
the two decades since his establishment of Falun Gong,” Lao writes, “his
true objective is to establish a new religion that respects himself as a
hierarch and ‘surmounts all the other religions forever.’”
Lao’s refutation is built around three key concepts. As he explains in his book,
first, he encourages readers to see through Li Hongzhi's artifice and
true intention. "Practicing five sets of actions" is merely his
artifice, wanting people to believe his "Dafa" theory is his true
intention. He tries to establish a new religion, claiming that he is
superior to Sakamuni, Jesus, and Laozi.
Next, Lao tries to peel off "Falun Fofa" layer by layer, noting how
it combines Buddhist terms, Taoist terms, nouns of natural science, and
common nouns of supernatural things to fabricating myth.
Finally, Lao hopes that “The Refutation and Analysis of Falun Gong”
might help readers to refute Li Hongzhi's scriptures based on
Confucianism, Taoism, and Buddhism, as well as on Western philosophy and
Christ's teaching.
